Flashback Friday Bloody Rage Retrospect

Retrospect: Bloody Rage

For the flashback game today I've chosen and old fighting game that was based off “Mortal Kombat” and includes many video game, movie, and comic book characters. The game is called Bloody Rage and it was released in 2002 to a several game sites back in the day, but I always played it on newgrounds. I played this game quite often in computer labs in school, because I really liked the character roster. Let’s see how it holds up today.

There really is no story here unless I made one up. Just popular media icons at the time in 2002 duking it out in a death match tournament.

The visuals here are not that great. The characters are all drawn out, but they don’t look good at all. The bodies for everyone are the same template with just different colors and accessories. The levels also look really bad, and remind me of low res screen savers.

Im on fiya baby!!!
Visuals aside the game play is what made this game fun. I mean there are 18 playable characters. For a little flash game in 2002 that’s impressive. The character roster is just smart, it has all popular choices from different genres. You have Spiderman, Yoda, Bruce Lee, Goku, and many more. What’s also even better is you can create your own custom character and take parts from any of the full character roster ( this probable explains why all the characters are built from the same template). Doing the review, I made a Goku – Blade hybrid. I guess you could call him Blaku. The only thing I don’t like is that every character has the same move pool which means no character is unique, so really playing with anybody in the roster is just for looks than skill. Which really sucks is a lot the characters have weapons, but don’t use them at all because they all share the same move pool. That aside the move pool is pretty big, you can throw fire balls, do round house kicks, shoot harpoons, and many more attacks. You also get a rage bar which charges while you fight, and when it is full, there are 2 rage moves which your character can unleash to do massive damage to the opponent. Like the "Street Fighter" series there are also little bonus stages where you can break barrels for extra points, but it doesn't hurt you if you suck at them. Also like "Mortal Kombat", there are fatality moves which after you defeat your opponent, if you put in right combo you can pull their heart out, punch them in half, throw into fire-pit, and more (I wasn't able to do all of them). There is also strangely no two player mode. I know two people huddle over one keyboard to play a game is weird, but a lot of other games have done it before. I think a multiplier mode would have been a nice addition.
Blaku is ready for you all >:)

For fighting games on the web, it’s not horrible but it has not aged well at all. The single move pool and generic stages make every fight seem just the same as the last, although the difficulty in opponents increases the farther into the tournament you advance. It still is a lot fun, there are a lot of different combos in the move pool and using your favorite character, or your own created one to beat up on enemies is a blast. It still by no means isn't a masterpiece but it’s a great little game that’s earned its spot in web gaming history.
um can I have that back? I sort of need it to live

I’m going to give Bloody Rage 3 roundhouse kicks out of 5

“OMG does this mean I have to fight evil Aliens and Vampires now … damn, Blaku is sad :(”

Antichromatic Game Review

Review: Antichromatic

Get ready because today’s title is extremely challenging

Today’s game Antichromatic is an adventure game that resembles an old NES classic Metroid. It’s a maze with platforms and obstacles. In addition to that you switch between dimensions to make your way across each room. You can switch the planes between the black universe and white universe. It is very fun and rewarding but be warned it is extremely difficult.

The story here is that for over a year the world within the game has been split into two dimensions separating people and families from each other. A small band of fighters knows as Chroma has join together to rid the force that has separated the dimensions. They recently have track the source of the force to a facility, and now it is up to your character to stop the force and return the world back to normal. Within the facility you find a suit called Chromatic armor, which allows your character to travel back and forth between dimensions to aid you on your mission. Trust me you’re going to need all the help you can get because it is not an easy task.

The visuals of the game are well, very chromatic. Everything is black or white depending on which dimension your traveling in. The game is consisted of all sprite work that resembles an old 8-bit game. Rooms remind me a lot of Megaman which include spikes, saw blades, and occasionally enemies. I love old games from way back, so this look works strongly for this title.
wall jumping between a saw blade is sick >:0

The game play is very hard and difficult. I don’t mean to scare anyone way that would want to play but it’s tough I can’t lie. If you ever played an old Megaman , Castlevania, or Metroid its on that level difficulty. There are power-ups for suit as well, in the style of Metroid that allow you to move further in the game. Unlike Metroid, it’s not hard to navigate the facility at all. There is only one path you can take throughout the place and the game lets you know in the begging which way you should travel. The beginning of the game is not very difficult at first with your character only needing to avoid spikes, saw blades, and change planes when necessary. However, after you obtain the black wall jump boots the game difficulty goes off the charts. The biggest issue I have is with the control. The character always feels slippery and when you need to jump on small platforms over spikes it can be very difficult. Using the wall jump for me was a nightmare. To do the wall jump successfully you need to hold back against the wall and then jump out away from the wall and you do this all with the A W D keys. Trust me when I say your left hand will be going sporadic on the keyboard when doing this. Hopping from wall to wall and switching dimensions back and forth, will make your head hurt because you need act faster than you can think. Each room as you progress just gets harder as you go on. I had to quit for 20 minutes at one point because I just couldn't take it anymore. The end room with the boss is the hardest, where you need to destroy 3 color blocks and defeat the boss all in one go without dyeing and there are many obstacles and dangers to avoid while doing it. Even with the difficulty factor, it is still a very good game. It’s not just hard and no fun. There is a challenge factor to it that makes it very rewarding. Every room towards the end of the game I conquered gave me a great feeling of accomplishment before the next room had me feeling overwhelmed.

If you like old NES titles I say give it a try.It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to beat Antichromatic, and I died 385 times. I’m sure my readers will be able to do better because I suck. So I challenge you all see if you can beat the Antichromatic

I’m going to give Antichromatic 4 failed wall jumps into spikes out of 5

“Come on jump OK now watch the spikes NOW jump…. AGH (punches monitor)”

Weak Wednesday Talk Game Review

Review: Talk

I just I don’t know … I really have no idea what to say about this game.

Talk is dull, boring, annoying, and just plain bad.

The story is … who the hell knows.  In the beginning you get a vague message “All meanings ,we know, depend on the key of interpretation” . I have no idea next.

How are the graphics? Crap, we have stick figures with no animation, six year old created ms paint faces, gray and white striped floors, green squares, and red squares. What the heck is going on here I would like to know?

The sound, thankfully is rich and wonderful with a fast paced energetic score… I’m just kidding ITS FREAKEN ANNOYING BEEPING. Seriously what the hell is this thing am I even reviewing a web game? Nope it says it’s a game people.

What the heck is that thing???
Game play, ha ha what game play?  You move you’re little floating green stick guy into other stick guys for about 5 minutes that it. When you touch another stick guy a mini game pops up with a ms paint monstration flapping its mouth. You then can move a green square which does nothing and click one of three face choices. You can choose mad face, neutral face, or happy face. Oh that’s it by the way that’s the game.

Was my review confusing? Well I’m confused of what I just did. This game is stupid. I’m guessing it’s trying to be artistic in some way, its tag says experimental. But come on man this is awful, just plain awful. What’s the title mean, what’s the flapping ms paint people mean, what’s the green square portions mean, what do the faces mean, WHAT DOES ANYTHING MEAN!

thrilling visuals :7
I can’t even rate this game. I want to give it a 0 out of 5, but I don’t think it deserves my judgement. No no you’re note getting anything from me “talk”.

I'm giving Talk out of *

“why is there and why do you and how do you … AAAGHHH”

Overall score: go to hell game!

I think in a Minute or so I will explode Game Review

Review: I think in a Minute or so I will explode

This one has a rather long interesting title that I think I will refer to as “I will explode”. Anyways, I will explode is a simple game but had me playing it for 40 minutes.

The story has a general of some sort from some nation??? Explaining that it is the hero’s job to climb to the moon to bring honor to their nation. It’s a little weird but doesn't really have anything to do with the game play. The hero also has an exploding collar on his neck, so whatever you do don’t stop or you will explode hence the title.

Graphics are very simple, when I first started right off the bat it reminded me of an old Game boy game on a Game boy pocket (not the original as it was black and green tone). The hero reminds me of a chao from Sonic Adventure mini-game, with big head and little body. The screen changes colors upon selecting a deselecting color blocks you want.

The game has you jumping up and up continuous the entire time jumping from block to block. The game will only let you jump to color blocks you have active at the time. To jump to white blocks you have to switch color to white and to jump to black highlight black. There are few special blocks which can spawn crushers, launch you up, or launch you down. My favorite part is you can wall grab the blocks which I use most the time to make my way up.

It’s very simplistic to the core, but if you’re in right mood like me when I played it, then you will have a lot of fun. If not you might get bored very fast.

I’m giving I think in a Minute or so I will explode 3 exploding heads out of 5

“What I’m not jumping up blocks you crazy AHH BLAGHDAG ….. “

Flashback Friday Alien Hominid Game Retrospect

Retrospect: Alien Hominid

Like Wednesday I've decided that Friday will also be a themed day here on the intrawebs. It will be known as “Flashback Friday” from hence forth. I will take a look at old games from the 90’s and early 2000’s, probable with a cutoff date around 2005. By doing this, it gives me access to all the great web games made since the birth of the web. Ill mostly be looking at well known high rated games, and also judging how well the game has held together all these years.  I hope you all enjoy this new section on site.

For the first Flashback Friday I’m going to look at one of the most well-known web games and probable the second most iconic figure besides Pico to come from newgrounds.com. I’m of course referring to the one and only Alien from Alien Hominid. The game launched on newgrounds.com in late summer of 2002 and was programmed by none other than newgrounds founder Tom Flup and the game art was done by Dan Paladin. So how does it hold up after 11 years? Let’s find out.

The story here is that an alien has crash landed here on earth, and out of all the places he could land, he lands in the worst spot ever, right in front of the US FBI Building. Right from the start every FBI Agent wants him dead and from there the story is unknown. If I had to guess I would say he just wants to fix his ship and go home, but he may also be a scout for an alien invasion. Who knows?

The art work done by Dan Paladin is Awesome. Some other games by Dan and Tom include “Dad and Me” and “Castle Crashers” on Xbox live arcade. His style is his own, a very unique look you see nowhere else. Everything looks hand drawn with colorful, cartoony, and funny animation. Even today you couldn't tell when it was made. A lot games and flash videos back then were made using game sprites from snes and genesis titles. It defiantly stood out in 2002 from everything else.

The game play is action packed, fast paced, fun, and challenging. When I first played it I got my butt handed to me hard. The FBI agents are no push overs what so ever and they move very fast and shoot often. Even today some people complain about the difficulty and slam the well-designed game. In truth you just gotta master the game play mechanics which can take a little time. For starters if you stay duck down the entire game you should make it to the end as all bullets go over the aliens head. The best way I find is to ride the agents and let the other agents shoot the one you're riding. You also get a combo score by doing this called a freak attack. Usually at most there are two agents on screen with more spawning every time you kill one. There are two power-ups for the alien’s gun, a fire upgrade and a electric one that tears through all the agents. There is also a melee weapon that works when you’re right by an agent. The best weapon, and my favorite is the alien’s mouth, where you can bite the agents head off after riding on their backs and instill fear into the other agents watching. The biggest short coming of this game is its length. It is only one stage long and then it’s over. Now today with some games being very long, for example Aqua boy, it took me an hour to beat that game but it wasn't as difficult. Plus this made in 2002 and the level of quality and programming put in, you can just tell doing the one level was tough enough, so I can let it slide.
YEEEEEEHAAAAW

In 2004 A full game of Alien Hominid was made for the PS2 with 25 levels based on the 2002 release game and received an above average score from most critics. I think the original holds up very well today and is still a great game.

I’m going to give Alien Hominid 5 Headless Agents out of 5

Weak Wednesday Slender Survival Game Review

Review: Slender Survival

Okay so here on the Intrawebz I've decided to have Wednesdays be all about bad web games. A game will be targeted in this category if it is (crappy, stupid, boring, unoriginal, or all the above). Now I don’t mean to just pick on the bad games here. I know people work very hard to create and express their ideas with their games and I will try to point out anything I like about it first, before I stab it with my verbal sword. So look forward to every Wednesday which I am now dubbing WEAK WEDNESDAY on the Intrawebz.

Slender: The Eight Pages is a game that has become huge all over the Interwebz. Anybody reading my blog here knows who Slender Man is. If you haven’t played it you at least heard about it or seen a meme describing the scary white face figure wearing a suit. Now that I'm pointing that out, no I’m not ripping on Slender which was created by Parsec Productions. I’m ripping on a little flash game that was based on it called Slender Survival. The best word I could use to describe it is capital ‘B’ oring.

Now first off I will talk about the pluses, which there aren't  many. It’s got that horror atmosphere like the source it was based upon. The sound to the game is perfect. It’s quiet but has that shrieking otherworldly Slender Man sound playing in background. First time playing I was on edge waiting for the demon figure to pop out and murder me.

Oh no don't hurt me cardboard SM  :-7
That is until I started playing and figured out all you do is walk left and right. Yup that’s it. You walk to left then walk to the right collecting pages. Not only that but you have a stamina bar that goes down every time you walk. Now I could understand that if my character was say “RUNNING”, but walking come on. I mean if the avatar on screen was a huge "350 pound guy walking through the creepy woods I would understand, but he looks like a fit young man in his 20’s to me. Not only that but slender is not scary at all. His standing stiff like a cardboard cutout and just floats after you when he is on screen.

The graphics suck. Its very pixely and doesn't look very good. There is a field, fog, and a cabin in the background, with obstructing trees in the foreground and it just loops over and over like a Flintstones cartoon.

Now I know it’s just a simple little game that you’re trying to get a high score on but man it’s so boring and dull. There are tons of games where your object is to last as long as you can heck it’s how games started. The reason I believe it has gotten a decent score to begin with is because it’s got slender in it. If you take him out, no one would like this game.

Now I don’t think this game is a lost cause. If there were rounds with different backgrounds, obstacles to avoid, speed up game play, and made slender increase in aggression per round that be a start. Could you image? You would get to round 10 and slender would be all Cthulhu on your ass that would be awesome.

I’m going to give Slender Survival a 1 cardboard Slender Man out 5

no-one has to die. game review

Review: no-one has to die.

So for my first review I thought I’d do a game that really surprised me and that was no-one has to die.

At first this game play seemed very simplistic move a guy, turn on water, lock door, done. However, it’s not really the controls or game play that made the experience a fun one, but in fact it was story. I haven’t play a simple browser game that actually got me involved with the in-game characters like this before. Each choice I made actually had me caring for the characters involved.

So let me break down the story without spoiling anything (yez there are spoilers). You are anonymous person who wakes up in a locked control room of a corporate building owned by the Fenix Corporation. The building is on fire and there are several survivors located on the basement floor and it is your job to help them escape. One little problem however,  you’re not going to be able to save them all and it’s up to you to decide who lives and who dies. The survivors and your characters all communicate through portable terminals in a chat session and each part through the story you learn more of what’s happening and the facts behind each person. The end has some surprising twists and it’s the biggest highlight of the game.

As game play goes you navigate everyone though each floor until the security system acts and has you play out a simulation of how to save the survivors and get them to the next floor. You do this by a very simple grid system that allows you to move each person once per turn, lock one fire door on each map, and activate water systems. Each turn fire will spread and so will the water as long as it is activated. It’s very easy and it’s just a little mini game that you do to control the story line.

Steve Kinda a Dick
The game also has some pretty good music. I especially like the grid screen music frantic and exciting. The game was made in html5 and not flash, which you haven’t seen too often but might start seeing as html5 is fairly new.

Overall I really enjoyed the game for its story and its outcomes. It only took me 20 minutes to beat the whole game so I really think anyone who likes a good sci-fi story should give it a go.

I’m going to give it 4 scorched bodies out of 5
